Benessere experienced the latest Budbreak in our 12 year history on April 1st, 2006, caused in part by an extremely wet and cool, early spring. Although we had a heat spike in July, the rest of the summer was mild, which continued on into the early fall. Subsequently, harvest came later for the second year in a row. After a quick shot of early rainfall at the beginning of harvest, the weather cooperated nicely to allow the fruit to ripen fully. For the second year in a row, we achieved physical maturity of the fruit without excessive sugar or raisining. We call the vineyard “Black Glass” for the obsidian arrowheads, spearheads and chippings left by the Native American-Wappo Indian Tribe who hunted and lived on the land from BC to the 1800’s. Winemaking This vintage allowed us to follow our normal path of gentle handling into our open-topped fermentors and hand-punching the skins into the juice. After 36 days on the skins, we pressed the wine into a combination of new, tight-grained American oak and once-used French oak barrels. Decanted once from the barrel, this wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered on April 7th, 2008. Tasting Notes “Black Glass” Zinfandel is known for its velvety textural characteristics, and distinctive spicy cherry and raspberry jam that are apparent in the nose. True to form, the 2006 follows in the footsteps of its’ siblings, providing considerable depth and layers of black fruit, cinnamon and clove in the nose as well as on the palate. Much like the “little black dress” that men love to see and women love to wear, this wine aims to please on the dinner table, as a gift, or in your cellar. As we put our best foot forward with this Zinfandel, we suggest you too look for pairing partners such as filet mignon, grilled Petaluma lamb chops, fine, aged cheeses and chocolates of all kinds. The 2006 vintage will age well for the next seven to ten years.
