History: Bill Collins is a Napa Valley legend. Never the shrinking violet; you need to be sure to want his true opinion of things if you ask for it. Don’t mistake his calm demeanor and Hawaiian shirt for a laid back personality. He has seen many changes over the years in the Napa Valley. As the owner of one of the oldest vineyards in the Valley, he remembers Napa Valley in the late 60s. We are proud to have Bill and Kathy Collins as our neighbors and friends. Their vineyard, planted in 1922 by Chinese immigrants, is a living testimonial to California viticulture. These mature vines are gnarled yet statuesque, and produce a wine of great depth and elegance which bespeaks their heritage and origin.
Winemaking: The 2006 vintage was a beautiful vintage for winemaking. After destemming, the must was “cold-soaked” for three days at 40 F. Hand punching the must for 20 days allowed the flavor and color to be extracted gently. The wine went directly into small French and American Oak barrels after a light pressing of the skins. It has rested in barrel for 15 months before being bottled on February 15th .
Tasting Notes: Our 2006 “Old Vine Zinfandel” possesses a deep ruby-purple color and a depth of aroma and flavor befitting the vintage. Black raspberry, plum jam, lavender and sandalwood are evident aromas. This Zinfandel is not a simple, fruit forward wine, but has elements of earth, ageworthy tannins, and a clean balanced elegance. Thus, this wine will lend itself to extreme grilling. Try grilled duck breast, sliced and drizzled with blackberry jalapeno barbecue sauce or for those less adventurous, try rack of lamb seasoned well with garlic, rosemary and finished with a touch of your favorite balsamic vinegar. For our vegetarian friends, grilled Portobello mushrooms, topped with arugula mache and the same balsamic vinegar is a sure thing. It will age well for the next 5 to 7 years.
