This deep-garnet wine is hugely expressive from the moment the cork is pulled to the last heady drop. Immense black fruit greets your nose: berries and cherries, mingled with cocoa and a whisper of coconut, and immediately invite you into this wine. On the outskirts of my perception, an unnamed fruit and a forgotten candy from my childhood cried out for attention. The mouth-filling, softly structured palate is filled with big, juicy berries…mostly black, with a gentle nuance of red fruit as well. With air, this medium-bodied homage to Zinfandel grows richer and smoother, gaining a voluptuous mouthfeel; creamy and liqueur-like. It becomes a mélange of smooth fruit, childhood candy and chocolate. The finish fades into dark chocolate, and currant begins to emerge, softly followed by haunting tannins. With air, this Zinfandel’s finish becomes even richer and longer-lasting. With a maturity you might not expect from an ’07, this Zinfandel is a wine to contemplate as you savor each precious drop.
