Obscura means “dark” or “darkness” in Latin. This wine is a extraordinarily special wine made from very ripe, un-raisined Zinfandel that were harvested very late at 40˚brix in Fiddletown at the Rinaldi Vineyard. The fruit was harvested on October 30th just before the first rain in the Fall of 2009. Fermentation was spontaneous and continued slowly until mid-December when the wine reached a natural equilibrium and balance at the numbers listed below. We racked and gently filtered the wine at this time to preserve the balance of sweetness and acidity in the finished wine.
As grapes ripen and get ultra-ripe the sugar concentrates and the acid concentrates as the water content of the grape diminishes. This is dehydration, but the grapes in this particular season still contained plenty of liquid and did not look too shriveled.
This wine could be enjoyed with most desserts, just as a Port is, or simply sipped by itself. It would make a wonderful Holiday gift. This is a rare wine that can only be made perhaps once a decade.
