Matt Cline is back in action with a new label called three. Focusing on the varietals he helped put on the California wine map – old vine Zinfandel, Carignane and Mataro – Cline’s new venture is a hit with critics and customers alike. Three’s philosophy is simple – dirt, microclimate and sustainable wine growing from the vine to the bottle. “Sustainable agriculture is what we’ve always practiced,” says Cline. “Discing and dry farming have been part of our farming techniques from the beginning, and our dry climate eliminates the need for inorganic products like fungicide. We’ve always done business this way and we’re lucky to have vineyards that help us.” As Spring 2009 rolls into the Valley, three will be releasing single vineyard bottlings that include a 2007 Carignane, 2007 Mataro and 2007 Zinfandel – all from vineyards more than 100 years old. Also in the offering is a dry, Russian River Valley Riesling 2008. And of course, three’s distinctive dessert wine S3x (S three times for small, sweet sips), a botrytis late harvest wine from the Russian River Valley is not to be missed. This wine won a Sweepstakes Award at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition -- among an assemblage of 4,000 wines from wineries across the United States.
