Claudia Springs Winery
Claudia Springs Winery was founded in 1989 by Bob and Claudia Klindt in the picturesque Anderson Valley of Mendocino County, California. The Anderson Valley, located less than 100 miles north of San Francisco, is one of the very best locations for producing fine, cool climate varietals such as Pinot Noir and the white Alsace varietals. The unique combination of warm sunny days and cool foggy nights allow the grapes to mature slowly, developing to their full potential.
Claudia Springs wines are made exclusively from Mendocino County vineyards with special emphasis on Anderson Valley grapes. We produce incredible estate Pinot Noirs and Pinot Gris from vines planted by Bob and Claudia. We also create award winning single vineyard designated and proprietary blended Zinfandels from premium vineyards in the Redwood Valley and Mendocino Ridge (1200 feet above the Pacific Ocean) along with a limited production of Viognier.
Our micro-winery’s annual production remains small at 2,000-2,500 cases. We prefer this level so we can continue to provide hands-on care of each lot of wine as we nurture it from vineyard to bottle. Every bit of the work, from crushing and pressing to bottling, is done by Bob and Claudia. Our hands-on approach allows us to maintain strict, personal quality control.
Our Story
In the spring of 1989, Claudia and Bob Klindt were traveling through the Anderson Valley during a weekend trip. At the time, Bob, who was employed as a social worker in Santa Clara County, had already demonstrated winemaking prowess with several prizewinning homemade wines. Somewhere near the rural community of Philo, surrounded by the hills of Anderson Valley's vineyards, conifers and oaks, they discovered a home and 20 acres for sale. The property was offered by Anderson Valley wine pioneer Milla Handley and included an assortment of winemaking equipment. The Klindts had dreamt of leaving the fast pace of city life, and it didn't take long for ideas to spring. By the fall of that year, the Klindts had sold their San Jose home, purchased Milla’s old property, and Claudia Springs Winery was born.
With winemaker Bob Klindt at the barrels, the winery produced 550 cases of Chardonnay in the first year. Bob coupled his own experience with extension classes in enology (winemaking) at U.C. Davis, and his Chardonnay evolved over ensuing vintages, culminating with a gold medal at the Mendocino County Fair Commercial Wine Competition. The winery began expanding into the Pinot Noir and Zinfandel varietals. These wines have garnered more than their share of gold and double gold medals in recent years. In 2001 and 2002 we had Zinfandels named to the Wine Enthusiast list of Top 100 Wines of the Year. Today, Claudia Springs wines are made exclusively from Mendocino County vineyards with special emphasis on Anderson Valley grapes.
In 1998, Bob and Claudia formed a partnership with extended family members to develop 13 acres of vineyards on the site. The initial planting consists of 8 acres of Pinot Noir and 2 acres of Pinot Gris. Expanding our operation to include our own vines allows us to further develop the unique palate and charm of Claudia Springs wine.
From those initial 550 cases, Claudia Springs has grown to an annual production of 2,500 cases, still well within the 10,000 case limit of a micro winery and just where we want to be! Every bit of the work, from crushing and pressing to bottling and marketing, is done by Bob and Claudia. Our hands-on approach allows us to maintain strict, personal quality control. This philosophy, steeped in sound winemaking techniques and friendly business principals, has allowed us to build a solid customer base ranging from individual wine lovers to some of the West's finest restaurants and retail outlets.
